TO BEHOLD, AND SEE
“The next day John seeth Jesus coming unto him, and saith, Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away
the sin of the world.”
John 1:29 (KJV)
We, too, can speak these life-changing words, and can cause others to recognize, maybe for the first
time, that they, too, can behold and believe. The word “behold” is found in the Bible hundreds of times,
and it is used to call attention to, or emphasize, the importance of the words that follow. The definition
of the word “behold” is: to regard, to gaze upon, or to discern. In this scripture, John the Baptist was
making sure that all who were beholding would not be confused about who Jesus was---that he was
(and is), indeed, the Lamb of God!
We have seen and heard the expression, “see it again for the first time”, meaning that we may need to
take the time, or make the time, to refocus our attention; to look beyond a casual or surface meaning;
to dig deeper. We are reminded, in Matthew 13:13, to see, and not just look; to hear and understand,
and not just listen---this certainly would include avoiding “selective” seeing and hearing, with which we
are all very familiar!
To truly behold the Lamb of God then, it can be said that we must see and understand, that we must
“get it”. With that acknowledgment, we should consider ourselves beholden to be his disciples and to
commit ourselves to bringing others to him. It is an honor and a privilege to be able to echo these words
of John the Baptist!
Prayer: Heavenly Father, keep our love for you fresh, and our willingness to serve you new each day as
we discern your will for us---help us to be able to “see it again for the first time” as we behold your daily
presence and guidance in our lives. Amen.
